"German ex-military patient, admitted for significant injuries after the war, including severe mental damage such as schizophrenia. He is physically in a vegetative state and mentally trapped in a kind of limbo from which he has to escape daily to avoid slipping into a coma until his inevitable death.

This mental state, comparable to sleep paralysis, unfolds in the 'Backrooms', environments generated by the protagonist's brain connections, influenced by the chemicals his own brain produces, mainly dimethyltryptamine (DMT), causing him to relive past experiences in a distorted manner.

This trance is not just an illusion, as it is his mind fighting to survive. He is in a borderline state where any weakness can lead him to a point of no return.

The only way to escape this continuous nightmare is to receive a stimulus strong enough to bring him back to reality in some way, such as a 'Core Memory', a key memory from his childhood that momentarily restores his true self—a burst of strength driven by nostalgia that can be decisive for staying alive.

These 'Backrooms' have several levels that correspond to the dream levels and sleep phases experienced by the patient. Each level he overcomes becomes progressively shallower, so that he can finally awaken from this lethargy."
